5 things that happened when I had a teaspoon of honey every day

Honey is well known for it’s health benefits with hair, skin and your immune system amongst others. So I decided to put it to the test and have a spoonful every morning for 3 weeks. Here’s what happened.

  • My hair became thicker and fuller
  • My teeth became whiter
  • My blood pressure went down
  • My energy levels increased
  • I recovered better from my workouts

If you’re doubtful over any of those claims you should be. Because none of the above actually happened, including having a teaspoon of honey everyday. I’m not going to lie, I occasionally add honey (and peanut butter) to a post workout shake, I call it the Yogi Bear and its all sorts of amazing. However, the reason I started writing this post is because the internet is the new wild west. It’s awash with misinformation in almost every social feed that you may or may not have forgotten your login details for. Some of it is dangerous and some of it is deliberately misleading to force you down a click funnel of misery and shame which affects your bank account and self esteem. Don’t get me started on before and after photos, they’re a powerful marketing tool but they hide the fact that your happiness isn’t inextricably linked to your body fat percentage or how many burpees you can do. That being said, always check where your information is coming from, is the person qualified to make the claims they’re making and are they accountable?

If you genuinely clicked on the headline looking for some health tips then this next bit is for you. Based on things I’ve learned from my time at iNform Health & Fitness, Bodyism and my 37 years on this wonderful and weird planet here’s 3 foundational things that I do every day.

  • Hydrate before you caffeinate – I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning because after 6-8 hours of sleep and breathing your body is going to be starting the day in a slightly dehydrated state. Such a simple thing to do but your body will thank you for it. I’ve got to the point where I don’t even fuss about with things like adding lemon anymore, 2 kids will do that to your morning routine. Grab glass, fill it, drink water.
  • Gratitude list – In the shower I run over a short gratitude list for my health, the health of my wife and kids and the things I’m grateful for in my life. It’s a quick and easy way to start the day with a positive and grateful state of mind. After all, life is mostly about your attitude and then a little bit about what actually happens to you. So work on fixing your attitude, every day.
  • Move – I move every day. It’s the simplest and easiest thing you can do for yourself. I often get up and walk when I can on work phone calls. I always find an opportunity to move especially if I’m not going to be able to get to the gym. I workout 2-3 times a week if I’m lucky. I’m ok with that, earlier in my life I would have been frustrated by not being able to workout more, but right now it’s what fits in with my lifestyle. When it comes to your movement it’s important that you find something you actually enjoy doing other wise it just becomes another ‘thing’ or ‘chore’. Always take the stairs if you can.

So… Beware of wellness on the internet… Because if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably someone trying to sell you something x

Side note: I don’t have anything against honey, it was just used for an example 😉
