FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Get the answers to our most frequently asked pilates reformer questions.

A pilates reformer is a resistance-based exercise machine comprising a sliding carriage, a spring system and a system of pulleys and ropes. As the user pushes or pulls against the carriage, the springs provide adjustable resistance that challenges muscles through a full range of motion. Unlike floor-based Pilates, the reformer allows for greater movement variation, deeper muscle engagement and more precise control, making it effective for rehabilitation, strength, flexibility and posture improvement.

The Aura supports a maximum user weight of 120kg. The Luma supports 150kg, one of the highest ratings available in a foldable home reformer, making it particularly well-suited for allied health and physio applications where patient load varies. The Una and Vera are built for studio-grade load; specific maximum user weight for these models is available on enquiry.

Most reformers use five springs. The Exhale Aura, Luma & Una reformers feature five German-engineered springs, offering a full range of resistance combinations for both light and heavy loading. The quality of the spring system matters as much as the number, the German-engineered springs across the Exhale range are calibrated for consistent tension that doesn't degrade over time.

The Xpeed Exhale range of reformers feature a total of 5 springs: 2 red springs, 2 blue springs and 1 yellow spring.

Red = full strength (heavy resistance)
Blue = half strength (medium resistance)
Yellow = quarter strength (light resistance)

A folding reformer, like the Aura, Luma and Una, can be collapsed for storage when not in use, making it ideal for home gyms, spare rooms and space-conscious studios. A non-folding or fixed reformer, like the Vera (coming soon), is designed for permanent installation in a dedicated studio space. Fixed reformers typically offer a more stable, lower-profile carriage height and are built for continuous commercial use across multiple sessions per day.

For most Australian home users, the answer comes down to space and practice level. If you're beginning or returning to practice, the Xpeed Exhale Aura, a foldable Thai oak reformer with a 130kg max load, offers exceptional quality at an accessible entry point. If you're an intermediate to advanced practitioner with a dedicated studio space, the Luma (130kg max, North American maple) or the Una (150kg aluminium, foldable) deliver a more premium experience. All three fold for compact storage.

The Xpeed Exhale Range

The Xpeed Exhale collection is a curated range of 3 premium pilates reformers and a commercial model on the way, designed and engineered for the full spectrum of Australian users. From those beginning a home practice to commercial studio operators equipping an entire floor. Each reformer in the range carries a distinct identity, material and audience, unified by a single standard of build quality and a commitment to precision German spring engineering.

When you buy a pilates reformer in Australia, the decision extends beyond price. Material quality, spring system precision, carriage smoothness, max user weight and the completeness of included accessories all determine whether a reformer serves your practice, or limits it. The Exhale range was built to remove those compromises at every price point.

Folding Pilates Reformers for Home

The Aura, Luma and Una are all foldable pilates reformers, designed for home use without sacrificing studio quality. A foldable reformer makes daily practice accessible without a dedicated room, each model folds compactly and stores vertically or flat against a wall.

  • The Aura folds to 1200 × 655 × 370 mm — ideal for apartments, spare rooms and lifestyle home gyms.
  • The Luma shares the same fold dimensions with a 150kg max load — the highest-capacity foldable reformer in the Exhale range.
  • The Una folds to 1350 × 680 × 400 mm with the added benefit of automatic rope retraction — eliminating the setup time that interrupts flow.

Why German-Engineered Springs Matter

The spring system is the mechanical heart of any pilates reformer. Inconsistent or low-quality springs mean inconsistent resistance and inconsistent resistance means inconsistent outcomes. Every reformer in the Exhale range uses precision springs engineered in Germany. They are calibrated to deliver consistent resistance across their full range of extension, session after session, without degradation over time. This is not a minor specification detail. It is the difference between a reformer that serves a practice and one that undermines it.

The Exhale Reformers feature a total of 5 springs: 2 red springs, 2 blue springs and 1 yellow spring.

Red = full strength (heavy resistance)
Blue = half strength (medium resistance)
Yellow = quarter strength (light resistance)

Pilates Reformers for Allied Health Professionals

Clinical reformer Pilates is among the most effective tools available to physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and allied health practitioners for rehabilitation and conditioning. The Exhale Una, with its 150kg max user weight, precise five-spring system and low-maintenance black microfiber leather, is designed with the clinical setting in mind. The Vera (coming soon) offers the same spring precision in a fixed commercial form suited to permanent clinic installation. Both models ship complete with all accessories required for a full clinical session.
