WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONTENDER BOXING GLOVES AND MITTS?

The Contender Gloves offer optimal hand positioning and comfort with a grip bar and webbed thumb. Additionally, the structured wrist cuff and 3-inch elasticised wrist strap offer robust support and prevent wrist flex during your punches.

The Contender Boxing Mitts differ slightly when it comes to the wrist strap. Compared to the structured wrist cuff of the gloves, the mitts feature a 3 inch elasticised wrist strap. This provides strong support and helps prevent wrist flex, giving you confidence for landing punches.

SHOULD I WEAR HAND WRAPS?

Whether you're blocking or striking during a fight there's 27 bones in the hand that cop an absolute pounding. Wrapping your hands adds that extra layer of protection and support as your hands are put through different forces. Which means you get padding for the back of the hand, protection of the knuckles and thumb support.

DO YOU OFFER BUNDLES FOR BEGINNERS?

Yes, you can find bundles of gloves, pads and wraps together here on our Bundle & Save Page.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EQUIPMENT FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOXING TRAINING (E.G., SPARRING, HEAVY BAG WORKOUTS, SPEED BAG)?

Training on a Bag

When your primary purpose is training on a bag, you'll want gloves that provide excellent support, protection, and durability. Bag training involves hitting heavy bags, speed bags, or focus mitts, which can be quite intense and put significant strain on your hands and wrists. Look for gloves with sufficient padding to absorb the impact and protect your knuckles. These gloves should also offer good wrist support to minimise the risk of injury during repetitive punches.

Padding density is an essential factor here. Heavier gloves with denser padding are ideal for bag work, as they absorb more shock and reduce the risk of hand and wrist injuries. Generally, 12 oz to 16 oz gloves are recommended for bag training, depending on your body weight and experience level.

Sparring

When sparring with a partner, safety is paramount. The gloves you use for sparring should prioritise the safety of both you and your partner. Sparring gloves need to have extra padding to reduce the impact of punches and minimise the risk of cuts and bruises during training sessions.

In most cases, 16 oz gloves are the standard choice for sparring. The added padding in sparring gloves ensures that you can focus on technique and timing without causing unnecessary harm to your training partner.

Competing

If you plan to compete in boxing, you'll need gloves that meet the regulations set by the governing bodies of the sport. The weight of competition gloves varies depending on the weight class and the specific rules of the event. For amateurs, 10 oz to 12 oz gloves are common in lower weight classes, while 14 oz to 16 oz gloves are used in higher weight classes.

It's crucial to check the guidelines of the boxing association or governing body where you plan to compete, as they may have specific requirements for the gloves used in competitions. The fit is also essential to ensure proper hand positioning and minimise the risk of injury.
